http://en.expreview.com/2008/07/11/nv-receive-qpi-license-give-x58-sli-permit-by-selling-chips/ http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hkepc.com%2F%3Fid%3D1440%26fs%3Dc1h&sl=zh-CN&tl=en&hl=en&ie=UTF-8 Didn't see that comin'. Good for competition, I guess. ..I'm not even sure if I want these chips on my board. Perhaps for future proofing when Nvidia has something interesting on sale. Other than that they're just going to mess with thermals, power, and layout. No yucky green chips on mine! Ha.

Yeah, it's pathetic - Rambus can't make any products people want (well, they seem to be selling them to console manufacturers and Cell users, who cares though?) so they sue people over their patents to make money instead. What a business model. I hope they fail miserably. |

I thought Nvidia would pursue X58 harder than that. With the way the video card wars seem to be heating up, if Nvidia doesn't come out with something really good by Q4, they could be in some very serious doo doo.

I'm going to stick with my 8800GTX for a while - I don't want a multi-GPU solution unless they come up with something better than crossfire on a single PCB (4870X2), and the GTX 280 really doesn't impress me at all, especially considering the price. I want the same kind of single-GPU generational leap I witnessed going from 7800 to 8800. Two generations have passed and it remains to be seen. |

the hd4870x2 is not a crossfire setup it got a internal bus connector( like fsb ) hd3870x2 uses crossfire link connection |

That was a silly rumor which ATI fanboys swallowed raw. It has a PCI-Express bridge chip just like the 3870X2, except this time it's PCI-E 2.0 rather than 1.1. Just as I feared. |

Hey guys, I'm interested in your thoughts on this... Do you agree with what I wrote? (view the blog article for the full story and images) Observations: What's perhaps most interesting is that NVIDIA may support SLI on Intel boards with the NF200 PCIe bridge/switch for either Bloomfield, Lynnfield, or both and never actually develop a chipset for this architecture. This may be a very good thing for all concerned. While NVIDIA makes excellent graphic cards, their chipsets on Intel platforms have always been riddled with issues. Gaming or 3D benching enthusiasts who want both SLI and the stability or reduced hassle of an Intel chipset may actually be getting what they want. NVIDIA will still make decent money from "enabling" SLI motherboards as they are rumored to be pricing the NF200 chips at a lofty $30 price point. Keep in mind that a full-fledged chipset will command around $50. So from the NVIDIA accountant's point of view, this looks very attractive... nearly $30 of pure margin from a very simple chip and no R&D costs associated with developing a new chipset. Intel should also be happy as they won't be competing againts NVIDIA for the enthusiast chipset market and any Intel platform can effectively be enabled with SLI by the motherboard manufacturer simply by designing a variation of their board that includes the NF200 chip. If these rumors end up being true, it looks to be a Win-Win-Win! |

The rumors appear to be true from everything I've read. I sure hope this chip is at least 65nm. I don't need some Skulltrail-like where there are two hot, useless chips down there necessitating a noisy southbridge fan.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/io_1216019719164.html Official press release. Confirmed 3-way SLI, then, unlike SkullTrail. |

Good to know. Thanks. I guess they will achieve 3-way SLI by using an NF200 to split 16 lanes from the X58 into 32 lanes and use the other 16 lanes in the X58 natively. I need to check into the operation/function of the NF200. |

http://www.digitimes.com/NewsShow/MailHome.asp?datePublish=2008/7/15&pages=PD&seq=205 I didn't see the Nvidia news release until now, but some have suggested that Nvidia may not do well given the current state of affairs. Edited by AKHandyman, Jul 15 2008, 09:46 AM.

Do you think that the SLI enabled motherboards will also support Crossfire? Or only SLI? Having both as an option would be great for upgrade possibilities. |

I suppose they'll have both, Skulltrail does. |
